Gaussian softness, tuned by a single number

The tool applies a Gaussian blur — the optical-quality soften in which every pixel becomes a weighted average of its neighborhood. Your intensity setting drives the radius of that neighborhood: small radii mimic a lens losing focus, large ones dissolve the image into moving color. Unlike cheap box blurs, the Gaussian falloff has no blocky artifacts; footage stays organic at every strength.

It is worth being clear about what full-frame blur is for. It is a compositional and stylistic instrument, not selective redaction — the whole canvas softens together. That makes it the right tool for backgrounds, dream sequences, transitions and texture, and the wrong one for hiding a single license plate in an otherwise sharp shot.

Where blurred footage earns its place

The most practical use never appears as an 'effect' at all: blurred video as a backdrop. A heavily blurred loop behind titles, menus or lyrics reads as premium motion design, and any decent clip becomes usable raw material at intensity 12–18. The Crop for Social tool uses the same trick internally for its blur-fill backgrounds.

As a stylistic beat, blur marks altered states — flashbacks, dreams, drunkenness, waking up. A short blurred shot cut against sharp footage does more than a long one. And at low intensity (1–3), blur works as a softening veil: harsh camera sharpness, skin detail and digital edge all relax half a step, which is sometimes the whole job.

Frequently Asked Questions

How strong can the blur go?

Intensity 1 through 20, mapped to a Gaussian blur radius. At 1–3 the footage softens like a shallow focus; by 10 shapes remain but detail is gone; at 20 the frame is fully abstract — readable as color and motion only.

Does the blur apply to the whole frame or a region?

The whole frame, every frame. This is a full-frame effect for backgrounds, transitions and abstraction — it is not a face-blur or region-redaction tool, so do not rely on it to hide one object while keeping the rest sharp.

Can blurred video be sharpened back?

No. Gaussian blur discards spatial detail permanently; sharpening afterwards only accentuates what little remains. Keep your original file — the blur belongs on a copy.

Is blurred video safe for hiding sensitive content?

At high intensity (15–20), text and faces become genuinely unrecoverable in practice. At low intensities, large text can remain guessable. For redaction, err on the strong side and check a paused frame — motion hides less than you would think.

Does the preview match the export?

Yes — the preview blur and the exported Gaussian blur are calibrated to correspond, so the softness you dial in is the softness you download. Export re-encodes at CRF 23 with audio untouched.
