What actually happens when you resize
The tool applies FFmpeg's scale filter with the height pinned to your preset and the width left to the math — the filter expression scale=-2:720 means "make it 720 pixels tall, keep the proportions, keep the width even." The frame is then re-encoded with H.264 at CRF 23, a quality level chosen to be visually indistinguishable for typical footage, with your audio track copied through untouched.
Because the aspect ratio is preserved rather than forced, you never get the stretched-face look that fixed-dimension resizers produce. If what you actually need is a different shape — square for a feed, vertical for Reels — that is a crop, not a resize, and the Crop for Social tool handles it with platform presets.
Downscaling is the honest optimization
Modern phones shoot at resolutions most destinations never display. A 4K clip posted to a group chat gets transcoded down by the platform anyway — after you have waited for the full-size upload. Downscaling first puts you in control of the quality of that conversion and cuts transfer time dramatically.
A practical workflow for large files: resize to 720p here, check whether the result is small enough, and only then reach for the Compress tool if you need to squeeze further. Resolution reduction preserves more visible quality per megabyte saved than aggressive compression at full resolution.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will resizing distort my video?
No. The scaler fixes the height (360, 480, 720 or 1080 pixels) and computes the width automatically to preserve the original aspect ratio, rounding to an even number as the H.264 encoder requires. A widescreen video stays widescreen; a vertical video stays vertical.
Can I upscale a low-resolution video to 1080p?
You can select a larger preset, but upscaling cannot add detail that was never captured — the player or platform would stretch it anyway. Upscaling mainly increases file size. The tool earns its keep going the other direction: downscaling 4K or 1080p footage for faster sharing.
How much smaller does a downscaled file get?
Resolution drives file size roughly with pixel count. Going from 1080p to 720p cuts pixels by about 56%, and the re-encoded file typically lands at roughly half the size or less. Dropping to 480p or 360p shrinks it much further — useful for messaging apps with tight limits.
Which preset should I pick?
720p is the safe middle: sharp on phones and laptops, light enough to send. Choose 1080p when the video will be watched full-screen on a monitor or TV, 480p for chat apps and email, and 360p only when size matters more than legibility — small text becomes unreadable below 480p.
Is anything uploaded while resizing?
No. The scaling and re-encoding run inside your browser via WebAssembly FFmpeg. The file never leaves your device, which also means resizing speed depends on your hardware, not your connection.
