Averaging in three dimensions
The filter's name spells out the approach: high-quality denoise, 3D. The three dimensions are width, height and time. Within a frame, each pixel is gently pulled toward its neighbors when the difference looks like noise rather than an edge. Across frames, the same location is compared through time — and here noise betrays itself, flickering randomly where genuine detail holds steady.
Each preset sets four thresholds (spatial and temporal, for brightness and color): Light at 2:2:4:4, Medium at 4:4:8:8, Strong at 8:8:16:16. Higher numbers mean more aggressive averaging. The temporal side is the secret weapon — it is why video denoising can outperform any single-photo cleanup: the filter has dozens of samples of every pixel per second to vote on the truth.
Rescuing the footage you actually shot
The classic patients: indoor evening footage on a phone, concert and bar clips, night streets, zoomed video (digital zoom crops into the sensor's noisiest region), and old camera archives. A Medium pass turns 'shame to post' into 'perfectly fine' more reliably than any other single edit on grainy sources.
Denoising also belongs earlier in chains than people expect. Brightening dark footage with Brightness / Contrast amplifies its grain — denoise after correcting exposure. And before a heavy Compress pass, a denoise makes the compressor's job easier, so the same target size lands with visibly fewer artifacts. Just resist maximum strength by default: the goal is quiet grain, not silicone skin.
Frequently Asked Questions
Where does video noise come from?
Mostly light starvation: in dim scenes the camera amplifies a weak sensor signal, and the amplification error shows up as dancing colored specks. Small phone sensors and high ISO settings make it worse. Compression then smears the grain into blotches.
How does the denoiser remove grain without ruining detail?
It uses hqdn3d, a filter that averages in two directions at once: spatially (comparing nearby pixels within a frame) and temporally (comparing the same pixel across neighboring frames). Real detail persists across frames while noise flickers randomly — the temporal comparison exploits exactly that difference.
Which strength should I choose?
Light for visible-but-mild grain — it cleans without touching texture. Medium for typical low-light phone footage. Strong doubles Medium's thresholds for security-camera or night footage; expect some smoothing of fine texture like fabric and skin at that level.
Will denoising make my video look plastic?
Over-denoising can — flat surfaces go waxy and motion can leave faint trails when the temporal filter is pushed. That is why the presets step conservatively. If Strong looks smeared on your clip, Medium plus a Light Sharpen afterwards usually reads better than Strong alone.
Does denoising help file size?
Noticeably, as a side effect. Random grain is incompressible — the encoder wastes bits reproducing it. Cleaned footage compresses more efficiently, so a denoised clip often comes out both better-looking and smaller, and any later compression pass goes further.
