Why videos end up sideways in the first place

Phones do not rotate the sensor when you rotate the phone — they record the same way up and attach a metadata flag saying "display this rotated." Most modern players honor the flag; plenty of older players, TVs, editing pipelines and web embeds do not. The result is the familiar sideways clip that looks fine on the phone that shot it.

This tool solves it at the pixel level. A 90° or 270° turn is performed with the transpose filter, which relocates every pixel to its new position — a lossless rearrangement, unlike arbitrary-angle rotation which must interpolate. After the transform the video is re-encoded once and plays upright everywhere, flag or no flag.

Mirrors, flips and combined transforms

Horizontal flip has its own daily use: front-camera footage is often mirrored, so any text in frame — a whiteboard, a t-shirt, a storefront — reads backwards. One hflip restores it. Vertical flip is rarer but handy for footage from upside-down mounted cameras, in combination with a flip instead of a 180° rotation depending on whether you want a mirror or a turn.

Transforms can be stacked in a single pass: rotate 90° and flip horizontally, for example, and the tool chains the filters in order. One pass means one encode, so combining operations here beats running the tool twice.

Frequently Asked Questions

My phone video plays sideways — will this fix it?

Yes, that is the classic use. Rotate by 90° or 270° to stand it upright. Sideways playback happens when a player ignores the rotation flag phones write into metadata; this tool physically rotates the pixels instead, so the fix holds in every player.

What is the difference between rotating and flipping?

Rotation turns the frame around its center — 90°, 180°, 270°, or any custom angle. Flipping mirrors it: horizontal flip swaps left and right (fixing mirrored selfie footage), vertical flip turns it upside down as a mirror image rather than a rotation. You can combine a rotation and flips in one pass.

Does a custom angle leave black corners?

Yes. Rotating by anything other than a multiple of 90° means the rectangular frame no longer fills a rectangle, so the canvas grows to fit the tilted video diagonally and the corners fill with background. Right-angle rotations swap width and height cleanly with no filler.

Is quality lost when rotating?

Right-angle rotations use FFmpeg's transpose, which remaps pixel positions without interpolation — every original pixel survives, then the frame is re-encoded at visually lossless CRF 23. If you select 0° with no flips, the tool detects there is nothing to do and stream-copies the file untouched.

Does rotation affect the audio?

No. Only the video track is transformed; audio is copied through bit-for-bit.
