One video, four canvases

Every platform wants a different rectangle: vertical 9:16 for TikTok, Reels and Shorts, square for feeds, 16:9 for YouTube and X. Reposting the same file everywhere means either black bars or the platform cropping for you, usually badly. This tool reformats deliberately, with the two honest strategies laid side by side.

The blur-fill mode is the more forgiving one. Under the hood the video is split into two copies: one scaled up to cover the whole canvas and softened with a strong box blur, one scaled down to fit entirely inside it, overlaid centered. Your full frame survives, and the blurred spill reads as intentional design rather than empty space.

When to hard-crop instead

Talking-head footage, product shots and anything filmed with the subject centered can take a real crop — the tighter framing often looks better on a phone screen than a shrunk-down widescreen ever would. The crop is a straight center cut, so check where your subject sits before choosing it; a presenter standing at the left third will lose an arm.

If you are producing for several platforms, run the tool once per preset from the same source file rather than cropping a crop. Each pass works from the original pixels, and each finishes locally in your browser, so a three-platform batch costs only a few minutes with no uploads in between.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which platforms are supported?

Four canvas presets: TikTok / Reels / Shorts (1080x1920 vertical), Instagram square (1080x1080), and YouTube or X/Twitter widescreen (1920x1080). Each preset outputs the exact pixel dimensions the platform expects, so nothing gets letterboxed or re-cropped on upload.

What does the blurred background option do?

Instead of cutting your frame to fit, it builds a layered composition: a stretched, heavily blurred copy of your video fills the target canvas, and the original is scaled to fit fully visible in the center. Nothing is lost from the frame — the technique you see on professional reposts everywhere.

What happens if I turn blur off?

You get a hard center crop: the tool keeps the middle of the frame and trims the edges to reach the target shape. Turning a 16:9 video into a 9:16 vertical this way discards roughly two-thirds of the image width, so it works best when your subject sits dead center.

Does cropping affect quality?

The kept region is re-encoded at CRF 23, which is visually lossless for typical footage. With the blur-fill mode there is no quality question at all for your main video — it is scaled to fit, not cropped.

Is my video uploaded to convert it?

No. The compositing — splitting, blurring, overlaying — runs as a single FFmpeg filter graph in your browser. Even multi-layer output like the blur-fill never touches a server.
