Why trimming here is instant
Most online video cutters re-encode your file — they decode every frame and compress it again, which takes minutes, costs quality, and usually happens on their servers. This trimmer does neither. It runs FFmpeg compiled to WebAssembly inside your browser tab and uses stream copy mode: the tool locates your start and end points, then copies the compressed data straight into a new container. No decoding, no upload, no generation loss.
The trade-off is keyframe alignment. Compressed video stores most frames as differences from a previous frame, so a copy-mode cut has to begin at a keyframe — a self-contained frame. That is why a cut set at 0:07 may actually begin at 0:05, wherever the nearest keyframe sits. For screen recordings and camera footage the gap is usually under two seconds; for heavily compressed downloads it can be longer.
Getting clean cuts
Type start and end times as mm:ss — 01:30 to 02:45 gives you a 75-second clip. If the moment you need sits mid-sentence or mid-action, set the start a couple of seconds early so the keyframe snap lands before, not after, the moment. The preview player shows the original, so scrub it to find your timestamps precisely.
Trimming pairs naturally with other tools on this site: cut first, then compress, convert or GIF the short clip instead of the whole file. Working on the trimmed clip makes every downstream step faster, because each tool then only has seconds of footage to churn through.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does trimming reduce video quality?
No. The trimmer uses stream copying — the video and audio data are copied byte-for-byte into a new file without re-encoding. The output is pixel-identical to the original, and because no encoding happens, even long videos finish in seconds.
Why did my cut start a moment earlier than I set?
Because stream copying cannot split a frame that depends on its neighbors, cuts snap to the nearest keyframe. In most footage keyframes occur every 1–5 seconds, so the start point can shift slightly. If you need frame-exact cuts, trim a little wide and accept the extra fraction of a second.
What is the maximum length or file size I can trim?
There is no upload cap because nothing is uploaded — processing happens on your own device. The practical ceiling is your browser's memory: files up to a few hundred MB are comfortable on a typical laptop, and since trimming skips re-encoding it is the least demanding tool on the site.
Can I cut out the middle of a video, keeping both ends?
Not in one pass — the trimmer extracts a single continuous range. To remove a middle section, trim the two halves you want to keep as separate clips, then join them with the Merge Videos tool.
Which formats can I trim?
MP4, MOV, MKV, AVI and WebM all work. The output is written as MP4 with the moov atom moved to the front (faststart), so the clip starts playing immediately when streamed or shared.
